Silak (pronounced SEE-LACK) Inuit for (wide untamed spaces) is based in Kuujjuaq Quebec, the most northern region of the province call Nunavik.
We hunt exclusively the Leaf river herd of caribou of the Quebec Labrador species . This Magnificent migratory mammal called (rangifer tarandus ) or Tuktu by Inuit , feeds on lichen a small fungus that is slow growing.
Due to the amount of individuals in that herd only, (between 500,000 and 600,000) they move all the time to feed. This cervid as good vision, moves fast, is a great swimmer, and is well adapted to the harsh conditions of northern Quebec. One important point to remember is that females have antlers too.
It could be very exciting the first time you see some caribou coming towards you, the decision to take or pass is always up to you, but your guide is there to help you makes that decision. He will take the time to carefully glass at the animal he will give you is opinion on the high & low points of the animal, he will also advise you of the shot scenario & approximate distance, but in the end the final decision is yours!
It is important for your guide to know your expectations and your capabilities (physical or else) he's a professional and is goal is for you to have the time of your life !! With these information's he will be able to help you as best as he could.

Your guide's job is to get you to the best location he thinks the caribou will pass this could be close to camp or 10 miles away, advise you on the hunting, help you carry the meat back to the boat or atv and get you back safely at camp !!!! He will also prepare the meat for transportation, you are expected to help and oversee the procedures.
The dividing of hunting area between guides is decided between the staff and manager at night after diner for the next day, based on the input of all the hunters in camp and the daily call from office, but all staff members carries motorola radios and plans could change during the day depending on migration to give everybody a fair chance.
Remember this is a migratory animal which means sometimes there will be hundreds of animals and sometimes just a few or none for a few days.
The managers from all our camps contacts the Silak base in Kuujjuaq everyday to analyze the caribou situation around their region, that way if relocation is needed we know where to take our guest to get a better chance to hunt.
